How to Teach the Pledge of Allegiance to Preschoolers

The Pledge of Allegiance is something Americans commonly recite at the beginning of the school day. According to oldtimeislands.org, Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892. Since then it has undergone a few changes here and there. Today, the Pledge has remained constant and we begin teaching the Pledge as early as preschool. This may be a bit of a challenge to teachers. With a bit of know-how, you'll be able to teach it to them in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Show your students how to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. They should stand, face the American flag and place their right hand over their heart. Demonstrate this yourself so students can see it.

    • 2

Recite the Pledge of Allegiance so your students can hear it. They need to hear it two or three times completely through before they begin to memorize it.

    • 3

Post the Pledge of Allegiance up in the classroom. Even though preschool age students can't yet read, having the words posted can act as a guide as they speak. If you point to each word as you speak, they will eventually learn to follow along at the right pace.

    • 4

Go over a line at a time until your students master it. Repeat one line, then gradually build up until they have memorized the entire Pledge. Point to each word as you say it aloud. Practice this at least five minutes each day.

    • 5

Send home copies of the Pledge of Allegiance and ask parents to help their child memorize it. The sheet can have an American flag on it for the kids to color. They can then post it on the fridge to serve as a reminder.
