How to Teach Italian to Preschoolers

Young children learn from what they see and hear around them. The best time to teach students a foreign language is when they are young, because as they grow older they will have an easier time becoming fluent. There are many ways you can incorporate simple Italian language lessons into the preschool classroom to help young children get a jump start on language studies. Activities should be simple and age appropriate, but completed often. Learning a new language is about memorization and repetition.

Instructions

    • 1

Say actions in Italian when moving from activity to activity. For example before nap-time say "tempo di dormire," which translates directly into "time to sleep."

    • 2

Repeat words often through songs, stories or speaking. The more children hear Italian words, the quicker they will understand what different words mean and begin using them. For example, work Italian songs into music time, such as "Batta le Manine."

    • 3

Label items in the room with Italian words and phrases. For example "porta" on the door or "stanza da bagno" by the bathroom. Though children cannot read, they do visualize and associate words with items from time to time.

    • 4

Sit with students and teach them small phrases such as "hello" and the names of common colors. Say the words and ask them to repeat.
