How to Teach the Story of Moses to Preschoolers

The story of Moses can be found in the Bible, specifically in the book of Exodus chapters 2 through 12. Moses is one of the major characters in the Bible. He grew up as a prince, led the Hebrews out of Egyptian bondage and recorded the 10 Commandments, among other things. Whether you are a Sunday school teacher, or you just teach your children at home, you can lead them through a few lessons on Moses' life.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the first lesson by telling the preschoolers that Moses was born during a time when the Israelites were slaves. A king named Pharaoh thought there were too many slaves, and ordered all the baby boys to be killed. Moses was a baby at the time and his mother placed him in a basket and set him in a river to save his life. Pharaoh's daughter found Moses and raised him as a prince.

    • 2

Hand the children each a coloring page of baby Moses in a basket. You can purchase a Moses coloring book, or print free Moses coloring pages online. This provides a visual image of the lesson.

    • 3

Place a baby doll in a basket and hide it in the classroom, or around the home. Send the children to find baby Moses just like Pharaoh's daughter did.

    • 4

Introduce a second lesson by telling the children how Moses grew up and moved away. God talked to Moses in a burning bush and told him to go back to Egypt to free the other Israelites. After 10 plagues, Pharaoh agreed to let the people go. Pharaoh changed his mind and chased the Israelites to get them back, but Moses parted the Red Sea and helped the people escape.

    • 5

Provide each child with a coloring page of Moses parting the Red Sea.

    • 6

Lay a refrigerator box flat on its side, and cut the top off. Cut the sides so they look like waves. Allow the children to paint the two sides blue, but leave the ground brown. Wait for the paint to dry, and cover the bottom of the box with sand. Let the children climb in to pretend they are walking through a parted Red Sea.

    • 7

Add a third lesson on the 10 Commandments. Tell children that God gave the Israelites the 10 Commandments so they would know how he wanted them to live. Moses went up to Mount Sinai and he wrote the commandments on a tablet as God gave them to him. Then he brought the tablets back to the Israelites.

    • 8

Hand out a 10 Commandments coloring page for each child. Read the 10 Commandments to the children as they color their page.

    • 9

Cut the outline of a large tablet from a piece of poster board. Print out each commandment and cut the commandments out. Have each child take a turn gluing a commandment on to the tablet. Hang the finished tablet on the wall as a reminder of the lesson.
