How to Plan a Nativity Lesson for a Preschool

The Nativity lesson is probably the most important lesson you will give during the preschool year, and there are many ways to make it fun and memorable for the students. Start by performing your own class nativity scene and keep the children interested by singing carols, making a treat and coloring.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the room by putting the plastic drop cloth on the floor and spreading hay on the plastic. Assemble the manger scene using the crate, the stuffed animals and the doll.

    • 2

Dress the children in robes when they arrive and place towels on their heads for headdresses. Assign children to be Mary, Joseph, shepherds and the angel. Read the nativity story in Luke 2:1-20. Have students act out their parts as you read. As Biblical language can be complex, take time to explain any phrases or words the children don't understand.

    • 3

Sing several Christmas songs that the children already know, such as "Silent Night" and "Away in a Manger." If time permits, teach the children a new Christmas song.

    • 4

Make "Baby Jesus Haystacks," allowing children to help you mix the ingredients. Place the peanut butter and chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for one minute or until the chocolate melts. Add marshmallows and microwave for another minute, or until marshmallows melt. Mix in shredded coconut and pretzel sicks. Drop onto waxed paper.

    • 5

Eat haystacks and have students draw and color a nativity-themed picture. Allow time for students to help you put the room back in order.
