How to Teach Sizes to Preschoolers

During preschool, children begin to learn about a variety of basic skills, concepts and ideas that apply to both academics and the real world. One of the skills that children of this age learn about that applies to both academics and the real world is size. Being able to determine the difference between sizes is necessary for ordering objects in mathematics and is also necessary for being able to identify items based on this attribute in life in general. When teaching preschoolers about size, there are a variety of hands-on tactics that you can employ.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Sorting

    • 1

Explain the concept of big and little to your students. Show them an example of something that is big and something that is little; a big ball and a little ball, for example. State the names of the sizes when you show each of the items to students and ask students to repeat the names of the sizes after you state them.

    • 2

Hold up one of the items and ask students to tell you whether it is big or little. After students state the correct size of the object, hold up the other object and ask them to tell you its size.

    • 3

Set out a pile of big and little toys. Encourage children to look at the toys and ask if they can notice the two sizes in the pile. Offer help, if needed.

    • 4

Remove a big item from the pile and ask students to identify whether it is big or little. Put the item to the side. Remove a little item from the pile and ask students whether it is big or little. Put this item to the side, away from the big item, beginning a big pile and a little pile.

    • 5

Invite a child to take an item from the pile. Have students look at the item and determine whether it is big or little. Have the child who selected the item put it in the correct pile.

    • 6

Allow each child to take an object form the pile. Have all students determine whether the item is big or little and have the child who selected the item place it in the correct pile. Continue the activity until all the toys have been sorted into a big pile and a little pile.

    Tall and Short Walk

    • 7

Discuss the difference between tall and short with your students. Stand up and tell students that you are tall. Invite a child to stand next to you and tell the class that the child is short next to you, who is tall.

    • 8

Ask children if they can think of things that are tall and short. Offer examples to start them off; for instance, a giraffe is tall and a mouse is short. Offer corrections, if needed.

    • 9

Take children on a walk outside. Inform them that they are going to look for items that are tall and short. Offer an example of a tall item and a short item; a tree and a shrub, for example.

    • 10

Walk with students and encourage them to point out items that they see that are tall and short. Correct students, when needed.
