Form a study group. A study group is a group of students who gather together to help each other learn. Study groups can help students who are reluctant to talk in class speak out privately. A nursing study group should focus on materials that may only be covered briefly in class, yet appear on exams. Bring textbooks and class notes with you. Meet at least once every week in a school library or at someone's house.
Work on basic skills. Nursing skills build on a foundation. The mastery of one specific subject, such as the principles of biology, often leads to other essential subjects such as microbiology or biochemistry. Students who have trouble with basic skills, such as math or reading, may find it hard to learn. Arrange for remediation that focuses on the student's problem areas.
Enlist volunteers to help. As part of their studies, many nursing students must learn procedures and apply them to actual living human beings. Such procedures may include the administration of medication. Ask friends and relatives if they are interested in volunteering their time to pose as sick patients. Working with people they know well can help some students feel more comfortable and learn to master certain people skills more readily.
Find ways to help students attend full time. Some students may have problems with nursing school academics because of other commitments, such as an outside job. An outside job can cut into the time they have to study materials. As a result, they may struggle with basic concepts and coursework. Help students by finding them more financial aid so they can attend classes full time. If necessary arrange onsite daycare for their children.
Get students access to additional academic resources. Contact administration officials. Ask if students can have access to the library and other quiet study areas when others are not using them. Designate a specific area where students can study without distractions or interruptions. Ask professors if they can offer students who are struggling access to help from them during non-traditional hours. A professor can help students by serving as a mentor and illustrating that hard work can pay off.
