The Advantages of Ethnographic Studies

Ethnography is a qualitative method of research employed in a number of the social sciences and humanities. Ethnographic studies are particularly prominent in social and cultural anthropology, sociology, and human/social/cultural geography. Many ethnographic studies frequently incorporate first-hand and direct field observation of the people or group being studied and detailed written narratives about the findings and experience.

    Focus

    • Ethnographic studies provide opportunities for researchers to study in-depth the ways of life and various cultural aspects of present-day human population groups.

    Methods

    • Ethnographic studies allow researchers to use a variety of unique methods. Methods of research employed by ethnographic researchers typically include direct field observations, participant observation, focus groups, and interviews. Occasionally, photographic and video work are employed.

    Culture

    • The culture, cultural processes, and how those processes develop over time for a particular group is one focus of ethnography. Ethnographic studies permit researchers to observe and study these processes directly in a comprehensive fashion.

    Behavior

    • The behavior and interactions of individuals within human population groups and groups as a whole is another focus of ethnography. Ethnographic studies are advantageous for researchers to witness, observe, experience, and describe these behavioral processes.

    Society

    • Ethnography and ethnographic studies present the opportunity for researchers to offer rich and thorough commentary on human culture, behavior, and society as a whole. This further enriches understanding of the human experience and human condition.
