In Connecticut, professionals in the heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) must obtain a license from the Department of Consumer Protection.     • Located in Waterbury, Connecticut, the Industrial Management & Training Institute offers evening programs in HVAC technology designed to help working adults prepare for licensing. Students meet four hours per week, and the entire diploma program requires 15 months to complete. Programs typically begin three times per year. The program focuses on low-voltage and electronic heating, cooling, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. The school participates in both federal and state financial aid programs, and counselors at the school guide students through the application process. The institution also offers short examination review courses on weekends to help students with licensing exam preparation.

    Lincoln Technical Institute

    • A nationwide school, Lincoln Technical Institute offers HVAC programs in the towns New Britain and East Windsor, Connecticut. Students can enroll in either the 12-month daytime or 24-month evening programs at both locations. In addition to core students in heating, ventilating and air conditioning, students take courses in electricity, understanding wiring diagrams, calibrating controls and soldering and brazing. The program is divided between classroom-based instruction and hands-on practice with actual units. Lincoln guarantees that all hands-on laboratory classes will have 20 or fewer students while classroom courses will have no more than 40 students.     Porter and Chester Institute

    • In addition to its main campus in Stratford, Porter and Chester Institute offers its heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) training program in Branford, Waterbury, Rocky Hill and Enford. The school offers one-year morning or afternoon program that lasts five hours per day, five days per week. In addition, an 18-month evening program is also available and meets for 4.5 hours per day, three days per week. Classes begin four times per year in January, April, July, and October. The program covers topics in residential, commercial and industrial HVACR. In addition to participating in federal financial aid programs Porter and Chester offers its own financial aid scholarships and award. The school also offers a career placement service for each student that includes help with resume-writing, interview preparation and career research. Students continue working with the Career Placement Office until they find employment, no matter how long it takes.
