Technical colleges provide students with course work needed for a specialized career, such as plumbing, electrical work, nursing or computer networking. In Connecticut, several options exist for adult learners in either a community college or vocational school setting. Students can obtain a certificate, complete mandatory classes or obtain an associate degree in a technical field.
  1. Naugatuck Valley Community College

    • In addition to adult continuing education programs, the Naugatuck Valley Community College offers associate degree and certificate programs. Online classes for several programs are also available. Students interested in pursuing an associate degree can specialize in the following courses of study: automotive technician, aviation science, business computer applications, digital arts technology, engineering technology, fire technology and administration. Certificate programs include quality control, wastewater, legal studies, horticulture, audio/video production and general automotive service. Each certificate program has different requirements for completion. Students interested in the wastewater program, for instance, take 29 credit hours and complete two certification examinations.

    Housatonic Community College

    • As a member of the Connecticut Community Colleges group of schools, the Housatonic Community College is accredited by the Board of Governors for Higher Education of the State of Connecticut and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Inc. The school offers associate degree programs, certificate programs, transfer options and adult continuing education. Students interested in pursuing an associate degree can study nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, computer science and pre-engineering science. Once a student obtains an associate degree, he can transfer his credits to another institution. Certificates programs include the following: network administration, personal computer repair, security operations, electrical and graphic design.

    Industrial Management and Training Institute

    • The Industrial Management and Training Institute provides apprenticeship classes, mandatory continuing education classes and license exam preparation classes for electricians, plumbers, electronic systems and HVAC technicians. The institute claims that students are ready to enter an in-demand career upon completion of the their course work. Apprenticeship courses vary in hours needed and prices. The electrical technician program, for instance, takes 752 hours for certification and cost over $14,000 as of 2010. Electricians and plumbers can take the mandatory classes necessary for licensure. To enroll in the institute, students must have a high school diploma or GED. Financial aid is available for qualifying students.
