Technical Schools in Kansas

Kansas offers a number of technical colleges throughout the state to students looking to pursue vocational or career training. A technical school allows recent high school graduates and non-traditional students to complete an associate's degree or certificate program in two years or less. This type of education can also be a more affordable option than a four-year university.
  1. North Central Kansas Technical College

    • North Central Kansas Technical College has two campuses in Beloit and Hays. The Beloit campus is the larger of the two with around 4,000 students, housing options and a gym and wellness center. Students can choose from 24 programs like bricklaying, diesel technology, practical nursing, automotive technology, general studies and welding. These programs can be completed in nine to 18 months and some can be completed online. North Central boasts a 90 percent placement rate for graduates and a cost of $4,500 to $10,500 depending on the chosen program.

    Kansas City Community College

    • Kansas City Community College is home to nearly 7,500 students, most of whom attend the school part time. Students can earn a technical certification in auto collision repair, machine technology, multimedia and video production, cosmetology, construction technology, heating and refrigeration and more. These programs are based largely on work-based learning. There is no on-campus housing, but the school does offer child care, a performing arts center, wellness and fitness center, and carpool connections.

    Manhattan Area Technical College

    • Located in the northeastern part of the state, Manhattan Area Technical College in Manhattan, Kansas, offers classes to state residents for $80 a credit hour. Programs include welding, business administration, dental hygiene, surgical technology, computer-aided drafting and others. Many of the programs available can be completed in just nine months.

      Manhattan refers to itself as the "Little Apple" and is also home to Kansas State University (KSU). Students may be able to transfer credits to KSU once they complete their technical training to pursue a bachelor's degree.

    Northwest Kansas Technical College

    • Goodland is home to Northwest Kansas Technical College. This school sits 17 miles from the Colorado border and offers associate's degrees in construction, health and human services, information technology and transportation as well as general studies. Some classes can also be taken online. According to the college, 90 percent of its students find jobs after graduation. The school provides student housing and day care as well as a fitness center. Interested students can also look into joining the wrestling, golf, rodeo or soccer teams.

    Flint Hills Technical College

    • Flint Hills Technical College in Emporia, Kansas, offers small class sizes of 15 students and tuition rates of $87 per credit hour. Flint Hills has 15 programs in fields of study like health technology, culinary arts, power plant technology and auto technology. Students spend 30 percent of their time in lecture and discussion and 70 percent earning hands-on training. Of its graduating students, Flint Hills reports that 93 percent find employment.

      Emporia is located in the east central portion of Kansas, between the major cities of Topeka and Wichita. The town of nearly 27,000 is also home to Emporia State University.
