LPN Programs in Connecticut

Several schools in Connecticut offer programs in practical nursing, a field of medicine predicted to grow by 21 percent from 2008 through 2018 by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These schools carry the approval of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, allowing graduates to qualify for the National Council Licensing Examination, which is necessary to obtain state credentials to work as a licensed practical nurse in the state.

    • Established in 1864, Stone Academy is a private career-training academy with three locations in Connecticut. The school's state-approved practical nursing program is offered at its campuses in East Hartford and Hamden. To enroll in the program, students must have a high school diploma or the equivalent, undergo a physical examination, pass a drug test and obtain CPR certification. The program incorporates classroom courses, laboratory practice of techniques and clinical rotations in healthcare settings in areas surrounding the school's campuses. Stone Academy participates in federal loan and grant, state occupational rehabilitation and work-study programs. The school will also match any scholarships that students receive from outside sources. Academic advising, a student service and social organization and career placement assistance are available for anyone enrolled in the practical nursing program.

    Lincoln Technical Institute

    • Lincoln Technical Institute is a private, vocational college with locations throughout the United States. In Connecticut, the school offers a practical nursing program in Hamden, New Britain and Shelton. Students spend approximately one year studying biology and anatomy, medical terminology, long-term care, obstetrics, pediatrics and geriatrics in both classroom and clinical settings. Although a high school diploma or the equivalent is necessary to enroll in the program, Lincoln Technical offers GED completion assistance to help students prepare for entry. The school offers federal grants and loans to qualified students as well as a limited number of institutional scholarships. The Career Services Department helps students with job research and interview preparation to help them find work after completing the program.

    Porter and Chester Institute

    • A private school, Porter and Chester Institute opened in 1946 and adopted its present name in 1973. The career college has branches throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts and offers a practical nursing program at its branches in Rocky Hill, Branford, Watertown and Enfield. Students spend 230 hours completing the requirements for the program, including clinical hours in settings that include hospitals, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics and the physicians' offices. Admission requirements include a high school diploma or the equivalent, an interview with a career counselor and the successful completion of an admission exam. Federal grants and loans are available. Each student at Porter and Chester is assigned to a career counselor who helps with resume-writing, interview preparation and scheduling and the coordination of follow-up with prospective employers after students complete interviews.
