HVAC Tech Schools in Florida

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for technicians in the field of heating, air-conditioning and ventilation will increase by 28 percent through 2018, resulting in the creation of 86,600 new jobs in the field. Florida requires HVAC technicians to receive a license by passing a written examination. A number of schools in Florida help students prepare to take this test as well as to work with heating and ventilation systems.
  1. Erwin Technical Center

    • Located in Tampa, Erwin Technical Center is home to more than 1,400 full-time students. Students in the HVAC program have the option to study for six hours, five days per week for 15 months or for four hours, four evenings per week for two full years. Graduates from the program receive a diploma and also hold the necessary chlorofluorocarbon (C.F.C.) certification to work with refrigerants. The HVAC program is approximately 80 percent hands-on practice and 20 percent lecturing, reports Erwin's website. For graduates, the school offers job placement assistance. The school offers financial aid to qualified students, and Florida residents receive reduced tuition costs.

    George Stone Technical Center

    • George Stone Technical Center is in Pensacola, Florida and provides HVAC training to anyone 16 years of age or older. A high school diploma or GED is not required to attend, but students must pass an entry examination in order to enroll in the program. Classes are held during the afternoons and evenings only with students able to choose a full-time option that meets for 6.75 hours per day, four days per week for approximately one year, or the part-time option that meets three hours per day, four days per week for approximately two years. Career placement assistance and tutoring are available for students. Need-based financial aid is available for students. Florida residents receive discounts on tuition.

    Southern Technical College

    • In addition to its main branch in Orlando, Southern Technical College operates smaller branches in Auburndale, Mt. Dora and Sanford. All four locations grant a nine-month certificate in HVAC. The program consists of approximately half hands-on training and half classroom-based instruction. The program covers both residential and commercial heating, air conditioning and ventilation. To enroll, students must possess either a high school diploma or GED and pass a written entrance examination. The colleges Career Services Department coach students in interviewing and job-search skills to help students find employment after graduation. Southern Technical offers financial aid for students on a needs-basis.
