The Savannah College of Art and Design allows students in its Department of Sound Design to acquire practical experience by using world-class equipment like digital recorders to score student films created in the Department of Film Production. The department teaches techniques in classes like Location Sound, Sound Effects and Foley as well as Introduction to Sound Design to teach students how to use the equipment in real world situations. SCAD's approach to sound design is probably the most complete of the three schools mentioned here, as it devotes the resources of an entire department to training and educating its students in both scoring a film and creating effective sound effects for movies.

The Georgia Tech Department of Architecture and Industrial Design contains an audio lab that is known as the Graphics, Visualization and Usability Center. It is a distinguished program that has even developed a virtual environment for treating Vietnam Veterans who struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. The sound design that is taught at Tech is more geared toward industrial design, such as the development of different products and the role that sound plays in its functionality rather than the more art-focused world of SCAD.

The UGA Drama Department teaches an Introduction to Sound Design course that instructs students in sound design for live theater and cinema. The department uses state of the art technology like Apple's ProTools for sound editing and design, wiring sound and cutting and mixing sound effects. UGA's instruction in sound design is more limited than that offered by SCAD, since it is embedded within a department, and focuses on showing how you can learn to use the principles of sound design within an established medium like drama and theater.
