Colleges for Art in the Netherlands

Culturally, the Netherlands is renowned for its freedom and casual attitude to most social issues. This ideology has played a part in the country developing some innovative Art Colleges. Five Colleges, in particular, succeed in offering opportunities for students to learn anything from product design to theater in their time in the Netherlands.
  1. Rijksakademie, Amsterdam

    • Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (or Royal Academy of Visual Arts) offers students personal studio space and a two-year residency in their converted army barracks. The number of applicants usually vastly outnumbers the amount of student actually accepted, with only 20 students getting accepted each year. This Amsterdam College of arts is open to foreign students, and many of each year's intake are from outside the Netherlands.

    Design Academy, Eindhoven

    • Design Academy -- Eindhoven has found itself gaining a reputation for design throughout this decade, and the Design Acedemy has played a major part of that. This is a terrific College to enroll in if interest is in design. The New York Times wrote: "Corporations are taking notice, recent graduates are seeing their furniture represented by prominent manufacturers and students are enrolling from all over the world."

Royal Academy of Art, The Hague

    • This College has the honor of being the oldest Art School in all of Europe. Formed in 1682, it has a long and rich history, but you would be wrong to think it is in any way old fashioned. Courses are modern and challenging, and the school encourages interesting and conceptual art.

    Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht

    • Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands is not the most well-known town, but its Art College is definitely worth consideration. The Jan van Eyck Academie has made a big effort to modernize in recent years and now offers personal and technical coaching to students on an individual basis and also hosts weekly "open days" in which members of the public can come and view the work that has been done by students at the College.

    ArtEZ, Arnhem

    • ArtEZ (ArtEZ hogeschool voor de kunsten) offers a varied curriculum and is worth noting if considering an "unusual" artistic pursuit. As well as offering courses in design and painting, ArtEZ also offers musical art and theater training. The College prides itself on the pursuit of fine art.
