Great Colleges for Art Majors

Art majors study a very broad area that covers traditional painting and sculpture in addition to innovative digital arts and the history of art and design. Factors to be considered in choosing a college range from the quality and ranking of the school to its affordability and location. The schools listed here were included in the "US News and World Report" 2008 rankings of best fine-arts programs.
  1. The Art Institutes

    • The Art Institutes (ai.artschools.com) are located in many areas across the country, including Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Virginia, to name a few. Some majors offered by these different schools include game art and design, digital design, photography imaging, media arts and animation.

    San Francisco Art Institute

    • The San Francisco Art Institute (sfai.edu) offers a two-year master's in fine arts (MFA) program. Instructors specialize in a range of subject areas including art and cultural theory, art history, film, video, sound, digital media, design, print media, photography, painting and sculpture. Coursework exposes students to various approaches such as aesthetic theories, new media theories, structuralism, semiotics, phenomenology, Marxism, gender and queer studies, post-structuralism and deconstruction, among others.

    University of the Arts

    • Located in Philadelphia, University of the Arts (uarts.edu) offer programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Some of the bachelor of fine arts programs include crafts, painting/drawing, printmaking, sculpture and graphic design; some graduate programs include a master's degree in art education or teaching, a master's of fine arts (MFA) in book arts, a master's of industrial design (MID), and an MFA in museum exhibition planning and design.

    Pratt Institute

    • Pratt Institute (pratt.edu) in Brooklyn offers a wide variety of programs at the associate's, bachelor's and master's degree levels. Programs include 2D and 3D animation, advertising, drawing, ceramics, jewelry, digital imaging, printmaking, web design, illustration, motion design, arts and cultural management, art and design education and art therapy/special needs.
