Technical Schools in South Florida

In southern Florida, a number of private and public technical schools offer post-secondary educational programs designed to prepare students for careers in a number of fields, including health care, computer science and mechanics. With locations in the Key West, Miami and Naples, these schools combine classroom-based instruction with hands-on practice. Many also offer financial aid and other services to help students manage the cost of higher education and succeed after graduation.

    • With more than 900 full and part-time students, Florida Keys Community College is a public, community and technical college based Key West with a smaller branch in Marathon. In addition to its bachelor's and master's programs in management, the school offers certificates and associate degrees in a number of vocational fields, including microcomputer applications, marine engineering and propulsion, nurse assisting, scuba diving instruction, navigation, welding and automotive repair. A lifted number of online courses are offered through the school as well. Career counseling is available for all students, and the college offers student housing. In addition to state and federal financial aid programs, the college also offers a limited number of needs-based and merit scholarships.

    Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology

    • Established in 1974, Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology is a public two-year college with around 600 students. Based in Naples, the school offers certificate programs in accounting, administrative assisting, early childhood, medical and dental assisting, nursing, medical billing, aircraft mechanics, culinary arts, cosmetology, computer technology, fire-fighting and contracting. Some of the schools courses are available online as well as in traditional classroom settings. The school provides career counseling services and a daycare center for students with small children. State, federal and veteran's financial aid is available as well as vocational rehabillitation.

    • A private institution, Florida Career College operates eight locations throughout the state, including four southern branches in Miami, Hialeah, Pembroke Pines and Lauderdale Lakes. Founded in 1982, the school offers both day and evening classes to accommodate working students. Certificate programs are offered in fields like computer repair, health information technology, computer networking, business administration, physical therapy assisting and skin care. Need-based financial aid, loans, veterans' benefits and work study are available for qualified students.     ITT Technical Institute

    • A nationwide, private vocational school, ITT Technical Institute has a branch location in Doral, approximately 10 miles west of Miami. In addition to a number of computer science bachelor's degree programs, the school offers associate degree courses of study in computer networking and web development, software development, computer aided-drafting, multimedia, visual communications, criminal justice, paralegal studies and health information technology.
