Phlebotomy Programs in Georgia

Formal training from a college or technical school is required to become a phlebotomist. The coursework and supervised practicum trains you for work in a hospital, clinic, or laboratory as a phlebotomy technician. You can also be certified through the American Society for Clinical Pathology, Association of Phlebotomy Technicians, or National Phlebotomy Association. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011, the average pay for a phlebotomist is 12.50 to 13.00 an hour.

    • Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) started accepting students in 1966 with the aim of providing training that allows for economic empowerment. The Central Georgia Phlebotomy training program requires each student to complete 26 hours of coursework to earn the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate. The courses are as follows: Anatomy and physiology, Medical Terminology, Introduction to Microcomputers, Introduction to venipuncture, clinical practice and interpersonal relations & professional development. Other requirements are the purchase of a uniform, a background check, a TB Test, drug screening, a CPR card, proof that you had chicken pox, malpractice insurance and a Hepatitis B immunization.

    Darton College's Allied Health Division

    • Clinical practicum

      Darton College's phlebotomy program consists of an Introduction to Phlebotomy I and Clinical Phlebotomy II. After completing the coursework, you undergo 200 hours of clinical or lab work. You must also satisfactorily complete 100 venipunctures and 25 skin punctures. Hepatitis B immunization and a background check are required upon acceptance to the program.

      Savannah Technical College, which started in 1929, gives students the opportunity to gain valuable training to become qualified Phlebotomy Technicians in a clinical, hospital, or laboratory setting. Twenty credit hours consisting of the following courses are mandatory before the certificate is awarded: Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology for Allied Health Sciences, Introduction to Venipuncture, and Clinical Practice. Hepatitis B immunization is required.
