Based out of Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Northwestern Michigan College's aviation program takes students through private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and flight instruction licensing. In addition to the licensing, graduates from the two-year program also receive an Associate of Applied Arts degree in aviation, which requires coursework in English, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences in addition to aviation classes. Financial aid and scholarships are available to qualified students. This public two-year college also offers housing, health services and career placement assistance for students.

A public school based in Kalamazoo, Western Michigan University founded its College of Aviation in 1990. Classes are held in Battle Creek at the W.K. Kellogg Airport. Through the program, students can earn a four-year bachelor's degree in flight science, aviation administration and aviation maintenance. Graduates from the flight program also earn a commercial license with instrument and multi-engine rankings. Piloting students take courses in psychology, economics, statistics, geography, communications and physics. The university offers financial aid, and scholarships and housing are available. The school also participates in the Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Based out of the Ottawa Executive Airport in Zeeland, Blue Sun Air is a private piloting academy. The school offers separate courses for private, instrument and commercial licensing. The program includes the FAA-required flying hours as well as ground school courses in safety and regulations. Depending on the level of licensing, the minimum hours of flight time required range from 70 to 240 hours. Blue Sun Air is also an FAA-approved testing center, meaning students can take their licensing examinations on site.

A private flight school, Solo Aviation operates from Ann Arbor Municipal Airport in the city of Ann Arbor. Founded in 2004, the school offers programs for private, instrumentation, commercial, multi-engine and airline transport licensing as well as flight instructor certification. The training provided by the school is entirely flight-based; there is no ground school component. Students only pay an hourly rate for the instructors without any other program-based fees.
