Charter Schools in Detroit, Michigan

Due to the Detroit Public Schools' loss of first-class district status, charter schools in the area are expected to increase. A clause in Michigan law bars community colleges from opening charter schools in first-class districts, or school districts with more than 100,000 pupils. In the 2008-09 school year, Detroit Public Schools enrollment dropped below the 100,000 student threshold, and the district lost its first-class status for the first time in years. Shedding the label means more charter schools can set up shop with the help of community colleges, state universities, conventional public school districts or intermediate school districts.
