California Online Charter Schools & Online Public Schools

California, as America's most populous state, educates one of out every eight public school students in the country. During the 2008-09 school year, according to EdSource, the state had 750 charter schools, a number that has increased every year since 1992, but still represents only 4.6 percent of the total student population. Online schools also fall under the label of charter schools, because they take a different approach to public education.
  1. Northern California

    • Insight California, an online high school, focuses on individualized learning. Its North Bay branch serves students in Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, Napa, Solano, Contra Costa and Marin counties, promising to "help students map out career and higher education plans by offering a career planning tool and suggesting course groupings, mentorships and internships."

    Central California

    • Students in Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings and Tulare counties may attend the Central California branch of Connections Academy, a nationwide online school for children in kindergarten through grade 12. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Connections Academy's authorization as a charter school comes from the Alpaugh Unified School District in Tulare County.

    • The Los Angeles branch of Insight California accepts students in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernadino and Kern counties. Pacific View Charter School serves students in San Diego, Riverside, Orange and Imperial counties. CAVA uses a combination of textbooks, individualized learning, group activities and parent involvement to help each student succeed, according to its website.
