Virginia Online Charter Schools

Choosing the right school can be a difficult decision, particularly in Virginia where there are only four charter school alternatives to public schools and a limited amount of online programs. There are plans to expand the availability of charter and online schools. Here is a list of education alternatives available in Virginia as of 2010.
  1. Virtual Virginia

    • Virtual Virginia offers Advanced Placement, core academic and elective courses to middle and high school students who meet certain prerequisites. Courses contain video, audio, whiteboard and online discussions.

    Richard Milburn High School

    • Richard Milburn High School in northern Virginia is not a charter school but does allow students to learn through an Internet-based program.

    York River Academy

    • York River Academy is computer-technology-based program that enables 9th and 10th grade students who complete the curriculum the chance to earn professional technical certifications.

    Murray High School

    • Murray was founded in 1988 and presently has 110 students. It is a charter high school that uses the Blackboard online learning system to supplement in class learning. Students classified as "gifted" make up 11.5 percent of the students, while 27.9 percent of students have disabilities. All Murray seniors are enrolled in Piedmont Virginia Community College.

    Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts

    • The Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts is a kindergarten through 5th grade science- and arts-based school focusing on environmental awareness and social responsibility. It is set to open in July 2010.

    York County School-Virtual Learning Program

    • High school students have access to more than 75 interactive online course offerings.

    Community Public Charter School

    • Community Public Charter School Program is a program for 6th and 7th grade students who are one or more years behind in reading and/or math and are interested in learning through the arts in a smaller middle school environment.
