Tidewater Tech Trades Vocational School began in 2005 with the purchase and subsequent name change of the Norfolk Skills Center. The private trade school is in Norfolk and has accreditation through the Council on Occupational Education. Students can pursue diplomas in welding, automotive repair technology or heating, ventilating and air conditioning. Programs typically last less than one year.
Eligible students at Tidewater Tech Trades can receive federal grants and loans, veterans benefits and private and institutional scholarships to help offset tuition. The school provides job placement assistance for all students.

The Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training is a public career college offered through the New Horizons Regional Education Center in Hampton. The school offers more than 120 courses and has an enrollment of around 2,000. Students can complete diploma programs in carpentry, practical nursing, air conditioning repair, auto mechanics, cosmetology, dental assisting, plumbing and welding.
The school also arranges apprenticeships in fields such as electrician technology, allowing students to supplement classroom learning by working alongside accomplished professionals in their fields. The school does not offer financial aid.

Luckes Beauty Academy is a private cosmetology trade school in Newport News. The school offers a state-approved program that qualifies graduates to take the examination necessary to become a cosmetologist in Virginia. The program covers hair cutting, coloring, texturizing, styling and extensions as well as wigs, manicuring and nail care, and skin care and facials.
Students have the option to study full time during the day for 10 months, part time during the day and on weekends for 15 months or part time during evenings and weekends for 24 months. The school does not participate in government financial aid programs but does offer an interest-free payment plan. The academy also partners with private lenders to help provide loans for students.
