Online Midwifery Schools

Men and women who want to become midwives have a variety of educational options. The American College of Nurse Midwives has certified many higher education programs throughout the country that provide degrees for midwives. Some states do not have programs available, but online distance programs are available for those who do not have a local program or who would prefer to work toward a degree from the home.
  1. East Carolina University

    • East Carolina University, located in Greenville, North Carolina offers a variety of curriculum plans for attaining a bachelor's of science in nursing. Students are required to be on campus for the first two to four days of a course, but after this point, they can continue their work online by submitting assignments and participating in online chats. Students are assigned to a clinical site within two hours of their area where they can work in a more hands-on setting. Sample courses include 'Philosophical Perspectives and Theoretical Bases of Advanced Nursing Practice,' 'Nurse-Midwifery Professional Roles and Issues' and ' Introduction to Primary Care for Well Women.'

    The Frontier School

    • Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, based in Hyden, Kentucky, offers MSN and post-graduate certificates in midwifery. These programs are available in a self-directed online format, and usually take two to three years to complete. According to the school website, "...the CNEP curriculum is unique in that it educates students not only to be nurse-midwives, but also to be entrepreneurs focusing on community assessment, market research, birth center development, and budgeting for a successful practice." Students are required to take traditional nursing and midwifery courses, in addition to classes such as 'The Role of Midwifery and Birth Centers in America' and 'Community Assessment and Market Research.'

    Philadelphia University

    • The Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University offers MSN degrees in midwifery, as well as postgraduate certificate programs. The master's program is only two years in length and is a fully online program for the first 10 terms. The course also requires two sessions of on-campus learning, where students meet with faculty and fellow students and practice in health clinic. The university utilizes the Midwife Tutor program, which "mimics the midwifery model of care for women": personal tutors assist students in 'giving birth' to the techniques and skills needed to be a successful midwife. Sample courses include 'Maternity and Well Woman Care,' 'Full Scope Midwifery Care' and 'Perinatal Complications.'
