Online Bookkeeping Schools

Bookkeepers are financial record keepers of businesses, social organizations and other entities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in accounting, auditing and bookkeeping are expected to increase by 10 percent from 2008 to 2018.     • U.S. Career Institute offers an online diploma program in bookkeeping. The program is a four-month program. However, students work at their own pace and may take up to one year to complete the program. With the online program in bookkeeping, students receive books, lessons, learning aids and some office supplies such as a hand-held calculator, a date stamp and a pen and pencil set. The program is divided into five instruction packs. "Instruction Pack 1" explores accounting basics such as the accounting cycle, bookkeeping equations and the journal and entry systems. In "Instruction Pack 2," students learn the ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial statements and specialized journals. "Instruction Pack 3" covers topics such as payroll records, banking, closing the books, using a 10-column worksheet, sales tax and depreciation. "Instruction Pack 4" focuses on computerized bookkeeping and bookkeeping concepts for partnerships, corporations and nonprofit organizations. "Instruction Pack 5" teaches students to initially set up a business' books, how to handle discounts, reverse entries and allowances. It also teaches accounting and record keeping for sole proprietorships. After graduation, students may receive assistance through the U.S. Continuing Graduate Career Support program at U.S. Career Institute. U.S. Career Institute was accredited in 2004 by the Distance Education and Training Council, Accrediting Commission. U.S. Career Institute offers students a no-interest payment plan. Payment plans for tuition are as low as $39 a month. Exams are open book. Exams are faxed, emailed or mailed back to the U.S. Career Institute. U.S. Career Institute is approved for military and Veterans Affairs educational benefits.

    Charter College

    • Charter College offers an online program for bookkeeping students who want to earn an associate's degree. Students may take an online fifteen month program and earn an Associate of Applied Science in Computerized Accounting degree. Classes are offered in 10-week terms, with five terms per calendar year. After graduation, Charter College offers assistance to graduates trying to locate jobs. Charter College employs a full-time placement staff to assist recent graduates and alumni in finding the right job. Charter College was accredited in 1987 by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.     • Penn Foster Career School offers a diploma program in accounting. Tuition includes books, learning aids, study guides, exams, software and tools. Instructors and support staff are available by telephone and by email. Penn Foster Career School was accredited in 1956 by the Distance Education and Training Council, Accrediting Commission. According to its website, Penn Foster is the largest online college currently in operation. Penn Foster Career School also offers students monthly payment plans with zero-percent financing.

    Herzing University

    • Herzing University offers an online diploma program in bookkeeping and payroll accounting. Students are required to complete 24 semester credit hours to earn a diploma. Twenty-two semester credit hours are required in bookkeeping and accounting. Two semester credit hours are required in personal and professional development. Students work at their own pace. A career diploma in bookkeeping may be earned in six to 12 months. Graduates of the Herzing University Online bookkeeping and payroll accounting diploma program are eligible to sit for exams to become certified by the American Payroll Association, the ADP Software Company and the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers. After two years of practical experience, Herzing graduates are eligible to sit for the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers exam. Herzing University was accredited in 2004 by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission.
