Ashworth College is an online institution that offers a landscape design program culminating in a career diploma. The program teaches students outdoor room elements, how to present ideas, and the process of combining trees, ground covers, flowers and shrubs in the outdoor setting. In order to accomplish this, students study elements of proportion and balance, as well as lighting techniques. To prepare students for the real world, Ashworth teaches them how to calculate the correct amount of materials needed to complete a project, as well as how to prepare bids for potential clients. The landscape courses are divided into 18 lessons that can be completed on the student's own schedule. These lessons include graphic techniques, hardscapes and landscape irrigation.

Penn Foster Career School offers a landscaper career diploma program in which students learn the skills to begin a career in the profession. Students learn through online classes how to service tools and equipment used while landscaping, how to create designs for landscapes and how to operate a landscaping business. Students also learn details of soil, fertilizers and various plants' health. The program at Penn Foster may be completed in six months, or on the schedule of the student.

Stratford Career Institute offers distance-learning courses in gardening and landscaping. Courses teach students gardening fundamentals, as well as how to care for various types of trees, flowers and plants. The program then moves toward teaching students about professional landscaping, addressing how to start a business, as well as implementing ideas. Students track their studies online, but also use traditional books delivered to their homes as part of the program. The program is divided into six modules, each addressing a different aspect of landscaping. Students may complete the modules at their own pace. Once completed, the institute awards the student with a career diploma.
