Landscape Design Schools in California

Several colleges throughout California provide landscape design degree and certificate programs. These programs provide students with the necessary technical expertise, hands-on experience, and professional skills they need to develop a career. Graduates will be ready for entry-level employment in landscape planning, design and construction. Some graduates may also choose to use their program as a stepping stone toward a four-year horticulture degree.
  1. Cosumnes River College

    • Located in Sacramento, Cosumnes River College offers an associate degree in landscape design. The program provides students with a strong horticulture foundation and the specialized skills that they need to become professional landscape designers. The program allows students to choose elective courses to design a specialized program to better suit their career aspirations. Some of the elective courses available include computer-aided drawing, agriculture accounting, agriculture business and graphic design. The program also requires students to complete a work experience in horticulture prior to graduation.

    Cuyamaca College

    • Through the Ornamental Horticulture Department at Cuyamaca College, students can earn an Associate of Science in Landscape Design. The program takes students through basic and advanced courses in landscape design and computer-aided design, and provides training in water conservation, plant materials and business management. Students will also complete a cooperative work experience as part of the curriculum.

    Pierce College

    • Pierce College, located in Woodland Hills, gives students the opportunity to earn an Associate of Science in Landscape Planning and Design. Students will learn the basics of horticulture and receive in-depth instruction in landscape planning, design and installation. The program also helps students prepare for their future careers by providing training in cost estimating and blueprint reading. Upon completion of the program, students will be ready to begin careers in residential or commercial landscaping.

    Modesto Junior College

    • At Modesto Junior College, students can earn a Landscape Design Technician certificate. The certificate program includes courses in plant materials, environmental horticulture, architectural drafting and design. Students will also take part in an agriculture work experience during the program. To obtain the certificate of achievement, students must complete 47 credit hours of coursework with a grade average of C or better.

    Santa Barbara City College

    • Students at Santa Barbara City College can receive an Associate of Science in Environmental Horticulture with an emphasis on environmental landscape design. The program provides students with apprentice-level skills achieved through lecture and practical lab courses. Santa Barbara City College utilizes two outdoor classroom gardens where students can gain hands-on landscaping experience. In addition, students will gain real-world experience through an externship program. Students who do not want to enroll in the two-year program may instead earn a one-semester skills competency award or a one-year certificate of achievement.
