Indian Boarding Schools

In the late 1800s Native American boarding schools were introduced by the American government as a way of preparing Native Americans for general society. These schools were often harsh and abusive to the students. Many of the schools were shut down within a short number of years. Few of the boarding schools managed to survive; however, some are still open and have taken a completely different approach to education. The modern Native American boarding school strives to enrich the student as well as prepare them for college and beyond. The schools listed are nationally accredited.
  1. Chemawa Indian School

    • Started in the 1870s by the United States government in an effort to help integrate Native American children into general society, the Chemawa Indian School is the oldest operating boarding school in the United States. The school is located in Willamette Valley, Oregon on over 400 acres of land. The student body consists of around 500 students from over 60 tribes. The school welcomes students in grades 9-12 and offers general high school classes as well as specialized classes on Native American heritage.

    Red Cloud High School

    • Originally called the Holy Rosary Mission, Red Cloud High School is a non profit private school located in Pine Ridge, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The school has as student body of almost 600 students and offers classes for students in grades K-12. Since 1982 the school has housed a museum and heritage center that is open to the public and also holds an annual art show for students to showcase their artwork.

    Sequoyah Schools

    • Located on over 90 acres of land outside of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Sequoyah Schools has a student body of over 300 students in grades 7-12 from 42 tribes. In order to attend the school, students must be members of a federally recognized Indian tribe or be a one-quarter blood descendant of a member of a federally recognized tribe. The school offers summer programs as well as athletic programs to their students.

    Native American Preparatory School

    • The Native American Preparatory School is located in Rowe, New Mexico and offers rigorous academic programs to their students in an effort to prepare them for college and beyond. The school offers a 5-week academic summer school program for junior high school students as well as a 4-year college preparatory program for their regular high school students in grades 9-12.
