Mount Edgecumbe High School is a public boarding secondary institution in Sitka. It hosts the Sitka Fine Arts Camp in the summer. The school opened on Japonski Island in 1947, on the site of a closed World War II installation. All students must learn a language, either Japanese, Chinese or Spanish. They must also learn some aspect of technology. Once a month, additional classes are held on Saturday.
The school works to promote the cultural identity of the indigenous population. For example, several student-led native Alaskan dance groups operate on campus. The school also runs an Extended Family program, in which a teacher or other staff member will invite a student to his house for dinner to help build rapport.
Bethel Alternative Boarding School, in Bethel, opened in 1998. The institution provides a fresh start for those who have had trouble in traditional schools. The school is open to people ages 15 to 20 and in grades 9 through 12. If a student reaches age 20 in his final year, he may finish out that semester. Students must be at least 16 to live in the school's residence halls. Students may live at home with parents or other family members. Besides standard high school courses, Bethel also offers vocational and life skills training. Community service is required for successful completion of the program.
Galena Interior Learning Academy, in Galena, a statewide boarding school for students in grades 9 to 12, began as a charter school in 1997. The school does not charge for room and board. The school offers a rigorous academic program and vocational education. Students also can participate on one of the Galena Hawks sports teams. As of 2011 the school plans to open a preparation program for certified nursing assistants.
The Nenana Student Living Center, in Nenana, opened in 2001. It houses up to 90 students and delivers curriculum including classes in physical science, anatomy, wildlife biology, standard biology, chemistry and physics. Advanced math courses, such as Algebra 3 and 4, trigonometry and calculus, are also available. The school also offers a vocational program with courses in wood, construction, metal and auto shop. For the musically inclined, band, drumming and choir are also available. The school also offers remedial academic courses.
