Middle Atlantic Boarding Schools

Although there are variations, the boarding schools in the Mid-Atlantic region tend to have a lot in common. Most are expensive with an average yearly tuition for a boarding student of $40,995. The majority of these schools also have high admission standards and large endowments, and many date back to the 19th century. Most of the schools are for both boys and girls.
  1. Lawrenceville School

    • Lawrenceville is a prep school that dates back to 1810. Consisting of a coeducational student body with approximately 800 day and boarding students, the school is located five miles south of Princeton University in the central part of New Jersey. The campus includes 20 dorms, a state-of-the-art athletic facility, a golf course and an extensive library. Class sizes are small with one teacher for every eight students. Approximately 75 percent of the teachers hold advanced degrees. Most of the students are in grades nine through 12, although it also has a one-year post graduate program. Students, who came from 40 states and 28 countries in the 2010-2011 school year, compete on athletic teams in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League.

    Mercersburg Academy

    • Mercersburg Academy is a private boarding school for female and male students in grades 9 through 12. It is located in the town of Mercersburg, which is in the central and southern part of Pennsylvania, approximately 10 miles from the Maryland state line. The school officially became Mercersburg Academy in 1892, although its root trace back to 1836. It has a demanding college preparatory curriculum that includes diverse subjects such as art history, world religions and field biology. The school has approximately 450 students and is on a 300-acre property with seven dorms, three academic buildings and an athletic facility that was renovated in 2010. The school has a large endowment of more than $185 million.

    St. Andrew's School

    • St. Andrew's School is situated on a 2,200-acre campus in Middletown in the central part of Delaware. Founded in 1929, it is a coeducational school for students in grades nine through 12. All of the student are required to board at the school. It has an enrollment of approximately 300 students, divided equally between boys and girls, The average class size is 11 and there is one teacher for every five students. The student body drew students from 26 states and 13 countries in 2010-2011. Approximately 425 students apply for its yearly 80 openings. St. Andrews has an endowment of $170 million and offers 90 courses. Campus highlights include a library that has access to the library at the University of Delaware, a chapel and the Forbes Theater. Students have access to a full range of athletic facilities, including a boathouse with 20 shells.

    Garrison Forest School

    • The Garrison Forest School is on a 116-acre property in Owings Mills, Maryland. It has three different levels, including an all-girls level in grades eight through 12. Approximately 60 of the 260 students in grades eight through 12 board at the school. Founded in 1910, the school has a student body that includes around 50 girls from foreign countries. The average class size is 15 with one teacher for every nine students. Over 50 percent of the faculty holds an advanced degree at a school with an endowment of approximately $36 million. All students are required to participate on the school's athletic teams.
