North American Boarding Schools

There are many private boarding schools in North America. The best of these are characterized by large campuses on hundreds of acres of land, quality educational and sporting facilities, and high annual fees. Many graduates attend prestigious universities like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford. Life at a boarding school is vibrant. Students typically live in dormitories with classes beginning early in the morning, sports in the afternoons, and extracurricular activities in the evening.
  1. Deerfield Academy

    • Founded in 1797, Deerfield Academy is based in western Massachusetts. Located on a 280 acre campus, the academy boasts 90 acres of sports fields, 24 tennis courts, a hockey rink, two gymnasiums, fitness centre, swimming pool, hockey fields, boat house, and 18 dormitories. The academy teaches grades 9-12 and the annual fees are $43,800, as of February, 2011. There are 620 students enrolled and class sizes average 12 per class. Graduates have a high college acceptance rate, and students benefit from a range of non-academic activities such as sports, arts, and clubs.

    Lawrenceville School

    • Founded in 1810, Lawrenceville School is based in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. The mission of the school is to "inspire and educate promising young people from diverse backgrounds." The school is located on a 700 acre campus with facilities that include a science center with 12 laboratories, arts center, chapel, and 18 dormitories. Athletic facilities include sports fields, gymnasiums, and a golf course. Fees at Lawrenceville School are $46,475 per year, as of February, 2011, with class sizes averaging 12 students. There are 815 students enrolled at the school. Competition for entry is fierce. Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and Columbia all feature on the most-attended colleges list.

    Phillips Academy

    • Founded in 1778, Phillips Academy is based in Andover, Massachusetts. The motto of the school is "non sibi" meaning "not for self." The school is located on a 500 acre campus and facilities include a library, art gallery, museums, language center, science center, and music center. It also boasts sporting facilities such as hockey rinks, a swimming pool, basketball courts, fitness center, 18 playing fields, and a boat house. Fees at Phillips Academy are $41,300 per year. There are 1,109 students enrolled at the academy, as of February, 2011. Many graduates attend the most prestigious colleges in the U.S. Over the past four years, 62 students were accepted at Harvard, 59 at Yale, and 47 at Stanford.

    Hotchkiss School

    • Founded in 1891, Hotchkiss Schools is in Lakeville, Connecticut. The school seeks to "develop in students a lifelong love of learning, responsible citizenship, and personal integrity." It is located on an 827 acre campus with a range of academic, boarding, and sporting facilities. There are 587 students who attend the school from grades 9-12. Fees are $43,500 with 37 percent of students receiving financial aid. Campus life is vibrant with 65 clubs and organizations and a range of sporting activities to choose from. Students start classes at 8 a.m. Sports begin at 3:30 p.m. and the day ends with a study period from 8-10 p.m.
