Texas Schools for Boys

According to Texas Almanac, a website published by the Texas State Historical Association, "Texas," or "Tejas," was the Spanish pronunciation of a Caddo Indian word that meant "friends" or "allies." Texas upholds its tradition of friendship to the present day, as the state's all-boy schools are not only educational institutions here, but also facilitators of lifelong friendships, started in school.
  1. Houston

    • With a population of 2,254,690 (2009), Houston is the largest city in the state. Its two leading boys-only schools are St. Thomas High School and Armand Bayou Montessori. St. Thomas High School, founded in 1900, is a Catholic high school with a student population of 710 in 2011. About 32 percent of students are students of color, which compares with 33 percent for all Texas schools, both private and public. Armand Bayou Montessori is a small private prekindergarten school with 71 students as of 2011.

    San Antonio

    • If you live close to San Antonio, the second-largest city in the state, you might consider sending your young man to the Central Catholic High School or the San Antonio Academy of Texas. The Central Catholic High School is a college preparatory school founded in 1852. Total enrollment averages about 555 boys, and some 85 percent of faculty hold an advanced degree. The San Antonio Academy of Texas, founded in 1886, caters to prekindergarten to eighth-grade students. The school has an average of 18 students per class.

    Dallas

    • Dallas, the third-largest city in Texas, has its own all-boy schools, including the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas and St. Mark's School of Texas. The Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas is a Catholic high school with a 2011 student population of 1028. Another option, St. Mark's School of Texas, is a nonsectarian school that accepts boys in grades one through 12. The school has 800 students on average, most of them in middle and high school.

    Other Cities
