Online Primary Public Schools

With the rise in the number of alternatives to traditional brick-and-mortar schools, many parents are looking to virtual options. For some of these parents, having their children taught at home seems appealing, but public school is free. Thankfully, there are some online public school options that may meet your needs.
  1. Connections Academy

    • Connections Academy is virtual public school that is available in many states. This school serves grades K through 12 and uses curriculum from a variety of publishers. While the curriculum choices may vary from year to year, you can be sure that the school uses a curriculum similar to that in brick-and-mortar public schools. For the younger grades, most of the curriculum is in the format of standard textbooks and workbooks, supplemented by online materials. For older students, the curriculum moves toward more online work. It is well-rounded and covers reading, math, writing, science, and social studies. Depending on your state and the availability of funds, there are many clubs and activities in which your child can participate. Some of these include a book club, an arts and crafts club, an environmental club, pen pals, and quiz bowl. In addition, the school will provide a computer, printer, and Internet access reimbursement if needed. There are also field trips offered. Your child will have a certified teacher assigned to him or her, and you will be the Learning Coach in your child's education.

    K12

    • K12 is a popular format for online public school and is available in many states. As the name suggests, the program serves grades K through 12. Curriculum is a mixture of textbooks, workbooks, and online lessons, as well as CDs, videos, and hands-on materials that correspond with the lessons. For primary school students, K12's curriculum covers language arts, math, science, history, world languages, art, and music. K12 provides a computer and an Internet access subsidy if needed. A state-certified teacher is assigned to your child, and a parent serves as the Learning Coach.

    State-Sponsored Options

    • According to The Daily Censored, 25 states have adopted an online public school option that is specific to the state. Some states allow students who aren't residents to attend, but others have residency requirements. For instance, in Florida, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) exists to serve students who reside in the state of Florida; non-residents may not "attend" without paying tuition. However, Mississippi Virtual Public School (MVPS) is set up to be a free public school for students in Mississippi only.
