Surgical Technology Programs in Maryland

A number of colleges in Maryland offer programs in surgical technology, a field the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 25 percent from 2008 through 2018. These schools carry the approval of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, meaning that graduates from the programs qualify to take the certification exam offered through the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist.
  1. Baltimore City Community College

    • Originally founded as an institution to provide job training for World War II veterans, Baltimore City Community College became a two-year public college in 1967 and officially a state-sponsored institution in 1992. The college is home to 22,000. Among the school's 35 degree programs is the Associate of Applied Science in surgical technology.

      The program requires an equal amount of classroom-based coursework and hands-on clinical training in Baltimore-area hospitals. All students must purchase liability or malpractice insurance before participating in the program. Baltimore Community College offers financial aid programs, including work study. The school provides childcare on-campus as well as free healthcare services for all enrolled students.

    Frederick Community College

    • Frederick Community College is home to approximately 17,000 students. The school opened in 1957 and grants both a two-year associate degree and an 18-month certificate in surgical technology. Associate-degree students take additional classes in general education areas like the humanities and social sciences. Clinical rotations take place two to three days per week in both programs. The surgical technology program boasts a 100 percent job placement rate within three months of graduation.

      To be considered for admission to the program, students must complete classes in anatomy and physiology and obtain a physical examination, vaccinations and CPR certification. Only 20 to 25 students are accepted into the program annually. Financial aid is available for qualified students as well as a limited number of scholarships.

    Chesapeake College

    • Established in 1965, Chesapeake College was the first community college in the state of Maryland. The school is in Wye Mills, a small community approximately 29 miles east of Annapolis. The college offers a 10-month certificate program in surgical technology. Students in the program complete clinical hours at the Memorial Hospital in nearby Eaton. The college also features laboratories for additional practice. The school offers state and federal financial aid programs and also participates in veterans' benefits offered through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Chesapeake College has a career centers that offers job placement assistance such as interview preparation coaching and feedback on resumes.
