Skyline College is a two-year college in the Bay Area that offers both a certification program in surgical technology and an associate's degree. Skyline's surgical technology program takes one year to complete, although students pursuing an associate's degree will need an additional year to complete courses outside the surgical technology program to fulfill degree requirements. Skyline's program only admits students in the summer, through a special application process. Its training program follows the core curriculum promoted by the Association of Surgical Technologists, focusing on both classroom sessions and hands-on clinical training. Skyline notes that graduates of its surgical technology program qualify to sit for the national certification exam.

A two-year vocational school in southern California, Southwestern College offers students a non-credit certificate program in surgical technology. Although students in the surgical technology program may take other classes toward an associate's degree, surgical technology classes do not count toward the degree. The San Diego Regional Occupations Program oversees Southwestern's surgical technology program, and the Association of Surgical Technologists accredits its training. Students learn about aseptic technique, disinfection and sterilization, pharmacology, anesthesia basics, and other focused surgical topics over the course of the year-long program. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification examination.

Fresno City College, a two-year college in central California, offers a surgical technology certificate program, as well as an associate's degree program. The surgical technology program requires approximately one year to complete--students must pass 39 credit hours of classroom and clinical instruction before graduating. Students pursuing an associate's degree must complete an additional 30 credits in areas outside the surgical technology program, such as the humanities and physical fitness. FCC's surgical technology program features classes such as anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology combined with two quarters of hands-on clinical training in a local hospital. Students who complete either the certificate program or the associate's degree program may take the national exam to certify as a surgical technologist.
