Students at Atlanta Technical College must first enroll and pass a health care assistant program to receive an LPN certificate. The health care assistant program requires completion of a minimum of 44 credit hours. Its core courses are English, psychology, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and diet therapy, introduction to health care, medical terminology for allied health science, patient care fundamentals, pharmaceutical calculations and introduction to microcomputers.
Only a select number of students who have completed the health care assistant program are picked for Atlanta Technical College's practical nursing program. The two-year college's program prepares students for the NCLEX-PN State Board Examination, which you must pass to receive a practical nurse license. Chattahoochee Technical College is located in Marietta, about 15 minutes from Atlanta. The two-year college offers a practical nursing program that requires students to first complete a health care certificate program.
The health care certificate program requires a total of at least 40 credit hours. It consists of English, composition and rhetoric, math, psychology, microcomputers, physiology, medical terminology and introduction to health care courses. Students must also choose one of four concentrations--certified nurse assistant, medical coding, patient care technician or medical office specialist.
Chattahoochee Technical College's practical nursing diploma requires completion of 97 credit hours. Occupational courses, including drug calculation/administration, nutrition and diet therapy and medical surgical nursing, are required.

DeKalb Technical College in Covington, about a half-hour from Atlanta, offers a practical nursing program that prepares students for licensure as licensed practical nurses.
