List of Universities in Hong Kong

The number of Americans studying abroad is at record levels, a fourfold increase over the past two decades, according to the Institute of International Education. And nowhere is that growth more robust than in China, which now hosts some 13,000 U.S. students each academic year. Of those, many favor Hong Kong, which regained Chinese sovereignty in 1997 after 150 years of British rule, for one simple reason: English is the major language of instruction. (That and the fact that this 426-square-mile region on China’s southern coast is a bustling international port, teeming with history, culture and exotic nightlife.) In all, Hong Kong is home to nine universities--eight of which offer study-abroad programs--where more than 122,000 people pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees annually. Here, in chronological order of their founding, is the complete roster of the schools.
  1. The University of Hong Kong

    • "Times Higher Education," the noted British academic publication, last year ranked The University of Hong Kong (or HKU) the 24th best university on the planet, putting it ahead of such esteemed American institutions as Carnegie Mellon and Brown. “Its reputation as a center of intellectual excellence is recognized around the world,” wrote THE of HKU, which was established in 1910. “It continues to build on its strengths with innovative research and teaching, producing well-rounded graduates with outstanding leadership qualities.”

    Hong Kong Baptist University

    • Ranked No. 73 on the "Times Higher Education" list of top Asian universities, HKBU was established in1956 under the auspices of the American Baptist Churches USA. But with a teaching staff of 583 full- and 999 part-time professors, the school’s program offerings are diverse as any non-sectarian institution--ranging from medicine to communications to visual arts. Or, as HKBU’s slogan puts it: “Excellence. Innovation. Whole Person Education.”

The Chinese University of Hong Kong

    • Founded in 1963, CUHK was the first university in Hong Kong to launch a student-exchange program. “The university now has more than 200 exchange partners and is sending some 600 students abroad each year,” says the school. “In return, CUHK receives more than 800 exchange and study-abroad students every year.” To boot, "Times Higher Education" ranked CUHK No. 46 on its most recent World’s Best Universities list, while lauding the school’s “mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West.”

    Lingnan University

    • A public liberal-arts institution, LU was founded in 1967 as Lingnan College and granted full university status 22 years later. Currently home to nearly 2,500 students, the school prides itself on taking a “whole-person” approach to education. That, according to LU’s mission statement, “enables its students to think, judge, care and act responsibly in the changing circumstances of Hong Kong, the region and the world.” In addition to offering degrees in nine disciplines--including Chinese, English, history, philosophy and business administration--LU awards $15,424 scholarships annually to numerous foreign students.

    Hong Kong Shue Yan University

    • Hong Kong’s first private university, HKSYU was established in 1971 and currently offers degrees in 12 disciplines, including journalism, history, psychology and law. Unlike other universities in Hong Kong, whose degree programs take three years to complete, HKSYU’s programs run four years. That adoption of the Western university model has meant the school’s forfeiture of government funding. But true to its mission of “training effective, efficient and well-balanced young people for various services in the community,” HKSYU (the only university in Hong Kong with no study-abroad program) graduates 3,700 students annually through self-funding.

    City University of Hong Kong

    • Though CityU offers a full complement of academic programs--from humanities to business to law to media--it’s the school’s engineering department that has recently grabbed the spotlight. The Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan has ranked CityU No. 1 in engineering research papers among all Hong Kong universities. So it should come as no surprise that the school, which is ranked the world’s 124th best university by "Times Higher Education," was also awarded a $7.7 million research grant by the Research Grants Council.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

    • Britain’s Financial Times has ranked HKUST No. 16 in its most recent list of top 100 global MBA programs, noting that the biz-school alumni rake in starting salaries of more than $108,000 annually. But HKUST’s 9,000-plus students don’t have to wait till graduation to live like kings. The school’s 140-acre campus is housed on a waterfront complex overlooking Port Shelter on the Clear Water Bay peninsula, offering breathtaking views of downtown Hong Kong and the South China Sea.
