Australia is known for its sunny beaches and laid back attitude, but it also houses several of the world's best universities. The U.S. News and World Report has ranked a number of Australian universities in the top 50 in the world, and each has unique offerings for both Australian students and those from overseas. With a variety of locations and degree programs, all students who want to study in Australia will find universities that cater to them.
  1. Australian National University

    • Australian National University is Australia's top-ranked university at number 17 in the "U.S. News & World Report" magazine's list of the top 400 schools in the world. (See Ref. 2) With the main campus located in Australia's capital, Canberra, it has over 16,000 students. Nearly 20 percent live on campus. (See Ref. 3) One in four students is an international student. (See Ref. 3) Students benefit from a large faculty--82 percent of whom have PhDs (See Ref. 3)--and enjoy the active social life on campus, choosing among over 80 clubs and societies. (See Ref. 4)

    University of Melbourne

    • Ranked number six in the world for graduate employability, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, (See Ref. 7) the University of Melbourne offers a wide variety of degree programs. These include agriculture, architecture, fine arts, education, engineering, environmental and natural resources, law, literature, medicine, music, history and veterinary science. (See Ref. 5) The school has 44,000 students, 25 percent from overseas. (See Ref. 6) Its Melbourne location is another draw, as The Economist considers Melbourne the "most livable city in the world."     University of Sydney

    • The University of Sydney is ranked in the top 40 of "U.S. News & World Report" magazine's list of the top colleges in the world. (See Ref. 1) Its Sydney location makes it attractive to Australians and international students alike. The university emphasizes "Sydney Choice," its flexible study programs that allow students to schedule their academic programs with freedom to fit their lifestyles. (See Ref. 8) It also boasts several famous alumni, including four prime ministers, two governors, Nobel and Pulitzer prize winners, and musicians and directors in the arts. (See Ref. 8)

    University of Queensland

    • Located in Brisbane, the University of Queensland is over 100 years old and offers degrees in the arts, business, engineering, and various sciences. (See Ref. 9) Its student population is over 40,000 with nearly 9,000 international students. (See Ref. 9) Its graduate employment rate is higher than the national average. (See Ref. 9) Every campus provides childcare for students and staff, and additional services include post offices, health centers and ATMs. (See Ref. 10)
