List of Belgian Universities

Belgium is a small country located in Western Europe between Germany, France and the Netherlands. The two official languages are Dutch and French. These are the languages, in addition to English, in which the classes at Belgium universities are held. Belgium spends about 6.1 percent of its GDP on education, compared to America's 5.50 percent.
  1. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

    • The Catholic University of Leuven, also called Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, is a leading Dutch-speaking university located in Flanders. It is the oldest existing Catholic university in the world and the oldest university in Belgium. The university was founded by Pope Martin V in 1425. With 36,923 students in the academic year of 2009--2010, the Catholic University of Leuven is also the largest university in the country. The vast majority of students and staff are from Belgium. The university has approximately 5,078 international students.

    Universiteit Gent

    • Universiteit Gent, or Ghent University, is another Dutch-speaking university in Belgium. Unlike the Catholic University of Leuven, Ghent University is a public university. Founded in 1817, the university now has approximately 32,000 students, 7,100 staff members and 130 faculty departments, spread over 11 faculties. The university offers programs in Arts and Philosophy, Law, Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, Economics and Business Administration, Veterinary Medicine, Psychology and Educational Sciences, Bio-Science Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Political and Social Sciences.

    Université Libre de Bruxelles

    • Université Libre de Bruxelles is a French-speaking university located in Brussels. The university prides itself on being an international university, with about one-third of all students from outside Belgium and 10 percent outside of Europe. The university has links with the universities of Waseda, Cambridge, Oxford, Berkeley, Paris IV, Montreal, British Columbia and the Collège de France.

    Universiteit Antwerpen

    • The University of Antwerp, or Universiteit Antwerpen, was founded in 2003 as a result of a merger of three Anterp universities. As of 2011, the university has about 13,000 students. Universiteit Antwerpen has seven departments, including Applied Economics, Arts and Philosophy, Law, Medicine, Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences, Political and Social Sciences and Sciences.
