H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College is part of the Alabama Community College System, which consists of more than 20 institutions governed by the Alabama Board of Education. As of June 2010, TSTC has 27 programs of study related to academic, health technology and technical disciplines. Programs include apparel and design, auto collision repair, emergency medical services, radio and TV broadcasting, radiography, sonography and welding.

Virginia College, a chain of private for-profit post-secondary institutions mainly in the southeastern United States, has a campus in Montgomery that offers certificate or diploma programs in cosmetology, medical assisting, medical billing and coding, therapeutic massage and pharmacy technology. It also offers two-year associate degree programs in administrative office management, nursing, medical office management, salon management and surgical technology.

About 30 miles north of Montgomery, J.F. Ingram State Technical College, like TSTC, belongs to the Alabama Community College System. However, Ingram State focuses on providing post-secondary career and technical education in more than 20 subject areas to incarcerated adults and eligible parolees to encourage successful, productive lives upon return to society and their families. The programs are delivered throughout the Alabama Department of Corrections system.
