Bishop State Community College was founded in Mobile in 1927. It now has four campuses in different parts of the city, serving the students of both Mobile and Washington counties. The college has academic transfer programs, associate degree programs, short- and long-term certificates and various programs in health sciences. There are programs to become both a licensed practical nurse and a registered nurse, as well as an associate's degree in American Sign Language. In addition to offering courses of study in accounting, sociology, criminal justice and political science, Bishop State also has an associate of applied science in funeral service education, which includes an internship period served at a local funeral home.
