Founded in 1963, the University of South Alabama (USA) has become one of the fastest growing universities of the south with an enrollment of nearly 15,000 undergraduate students, 2,800 graduate students and 5,500 faculty and staff. USA has ten different schools and colleges within the university which offer many different types of degree programs. Some of USA's academic departments include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Medicine, College of Nursing, the Mitchell College of Business and the School of Computer Science and Informational Sciences. USA sponsors seven men's and eight women's intercollegiate sports. Nicknamed 'The Jaguars', the USA teams compete in the Sun Belt Conference and are affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1.

Spring Hill College, located on the outskirts of Mobile contains a 381 acre campus which includes an 18 hole golf course and several buildings which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Spring Hill College was the first Catholic college in the southeastern United States and is the third oldest Jesuit college in the United States. The college enrolls approximately 1,500 undergraduates and guarantees four year on-campus housing for students. Spring Hill College is accredited to award associates, baccalaureate, and master's degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (CCSACS). Academic departments include business and management, language and literature, nursing and sciences among others.

Bishop State Community College has four campuses located in the city of Mobile, with the main campus at North Broad street. Bishop State enrolls approximately 3,500 students and employs 373 faculty and staff. Approximately 41 percent of students are enrolled full time. Programs of study include academic and technical programs. Academic departments include social sciences, business and economics, education, health related professions, humanities and natural sciences and mathematics. Technical programs include commercial and industrial technologies, consumer and transportation technologies, and engineering and construction. As a member of the Alabama State College and University system, Bishop State has transfer multiple agreements with sister colleges and universities for students who complete their associates degree.
