The College of New Jersey, located only a few miles from Hamilton in nearby Ewing, is a four-year public university with a core focus on liberal arts education. Thomas Edison State College, located in Trenton is a state university designed specifically to meet the needs of adult learners who wish to either complete a previously started undergraduate degree, or start a new degree in an undergraduate or graduate program. The school focuses on distance education through independent studies and online courses designed to fit the schedule of the particular student. Rider University is a four-year college located less than 10 miles north and west of Hamilton. The school, founded in 1865, serves a population of just less than 6,000 undergraduate students. Rider University offers undergraduate degrees through its four academic colleges: Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Continuing Studies and the Westminster College of the Arts. Rider competes in a wide range of athletics at the NCAA Division I level, including a nationally recognized wrestling program.

Founded in 1966, Mercer County Community College, is in West Windsor, a few miles north of Hamilton. The college serves primarily Mercer County residents, and has about 13,000 students registered for coursework in any given year. The school offers full-time and part-time associate degree programs in more than 60 areas of study. Students can study at the school's 292-acre campus, or take advantage of its distance and virtual learning programs.
