Portland, Oregon Dental Schools

Portland, known as "the City of Roses," is located 13 miles from the Washington border in north central Oregon. There are 24 schools of higher education in and around Portland, five of which are dental schools or have schools of dentistry. Some dental schools in Portland are often associated with other medical and health care programs, such as Concorde Career College's nursing, respiratory therapy and medical assisting curriculum.
  1. Concorde Career College

    • Concorde Career College is located just off the Battlefield Expressway, on the east side of the Willamette River. The college has 12 other campuses in and around the U.S., and offers students dental assistant and dental hygienist programs. The dental hygiene program is a 17-month long program that teaches skills such as taking vital signs, medical and dental history compilation, how to perform external and internal oral examinations, how to perform gum and teeth examinations, and how to take X-rays. The dental assistant program is designed to prepare students to work alongside the dentist as well as in the front office. Students will learn instrument sterilization, instrument tray preparation, oral examination, x-ray development, fluoride treatment, as well as perform various office duties, such as record keeping and appointment scheduling. Both dental hygienists and dental assistants work in private, group and specialty practices, public health clinics, hospitals and dental supply manufacturers.

    Oregon Health & Science University

    • The Oregon Health and Science University is located between Shriner's Hospital for Children and Doernbecher Children's Hospital, on the west side of the Willamette River and Interstate 5. The University has nine dentistry departments: Endodontics, Community Dentistry, Integrative Biosciences, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pathology and Radiology, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontology and Restorative Dentistry. The School of Dentistry at the Oregon Health and Science University offers a Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD), an MD in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and certificates in Endodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Periodontology. Programs are between 24 and 72 months in duration.

    Heald College

    • Heald College's Portland campus is located just off of N.E. Columbia Boulevard on the east side of the Colwood National Golf Club. The college has 11 campuses throughout the western U.S., and offers students a diploma and degree in dental assisting. The college also offers internships and externships in dental assisting. Established in 1863, Heald College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The dental program teaches students dental terminology, CPR training, radiology and chair-side assisting.
