Portland, Oregon Vocational Nursing Schools

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for licensed vocational nurses (sometimes called licensed practical nurses) will increase by 21 percent from 2008 through 2018, resulting in the creation of 155,600 new jobs. The Oregon State Board of Nursing has the responsibility of accrediting the educational programs within the state that qualify graduates to take the state licensing examination for vocational nursing. Three of the Board's approved schools are located in Portland, Oregon's largest city.

    • Established in 1994, Sumner College is a private institution with only one location based in Portland, Oregon. The college features small class sizes with typically 10 to 12 students. The one-year Licensed Practical Nursing program features clinical, laboratory and traditional classes. Students attending classes at Sumner College can apply for federal grants or take advantage of federal loans. The school offers free career counseling, job search assistance and other career services to help graduates find employment in nursing.

    Apollo College

    • Apollo College is a private vocational college with branches throughout the western United States. The school's Portland branch has Oregon State Board of Nursing approval for its nursing program and has an enrollment of more than 1,200 students. The one-year nursing curriculum requires students to complete short clinical rotations in the field in addition to classroom-based lectures. Apollo College participates in both federal and state financial aid programs.

    Concorde Career College

    • A private vocational-technical school, Concorde Career College has 13 locations nationwide. The college has approximately 540 students at its Portland location and offers a certificate in Practical Nursing. The program requires 13 months of full-time study to complete, 955 hours of which are spent in clinical settings. Students take classes in anatomy, pharmacology, medical law, ethics, preventative and rehabilitative medicine, cultural differences and leadership. Eligible students can take advantage of federal grant and loan programs to help offset the cost of tuition. The school's Career Services department helps student write resumes, research employment opportunities and prepare for interviews. Job placement assistance is available throughout a student's career.
