Bellevue College is about three hours from Portland. The school has an associate’s program in diagnostic medical sonography and awards an associate in arts in Diagnostics Ultrasound Technology. The ultrasound program is four quarter terms plus two summer sessions in length. The school also offers a certificate of completion in Breast Ultrasound. The certificate is designed for current mammographers who wish to extend their knowledge and skills into breast ultrasound scanning. The certificate program takes three quarter terms to complete. Applicants for the associate degree must complete prerequisite courses including intermediate algebra, physics and biomedical ethics.

Seattle University is an approximate three-hour drive from Portland. The school offers a bachelor of science in Diagnostic Ultrasound. The school has a clinical coordinator arrange all clinical internships. Clinical internships are 12 months and available in two specializations. Students study their specialty, cardiovascular ultrasound or general vascular ultrasound, for the entire 12 months. Internships can be completed in state or out of state. Applicant requirements include two letters of recommendation, a personal essay and submission of all official school transcripts.

Tacoma Community College is two-and--a-half hours from Portland. The school offers an associate program in diagnostic medical sonography. Graduates of the program earn an associate of applied science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students attend full-time and complete the course in 21 months. Applicants must submit a Health, Justice and Human Services application along with an application to the college (if not already enrolled). Application requirements include attendance at an information session, eight hours of direct patient care, eight hours of job shadowing and completion of prerequisite courses.
