Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington, is a little under three hours from Portland. The college, formally known as Bellevue Community College, has an associate's program in diagnostic ultrasound. Applicants must complete prerequisite courses in English, algebra, medical terminology, sociology, bioethics and the sciences. Those admitted to the program complete clinical practicums throughout their second year. In addition to the eight-quarter associate's program, students already working as mammographers can earn a certificate in breast ultrasound at Bellevue. The certificate program is three quarters in length.

About three hours from Portland is Seattle University in Washington. This four-year institution offers a bachelor's degree program in diagnostic ultrasound. In addition to obtaining knowledge and skills in medical sonography, students have the option to concentrate in vascular or cardiac sonography. The university requires students to complete a 12-month, full-time clinical sonography internship at an approved medical facility. Individuals interested in enrolling in the Seattle University program must submit an application, personal essay, two letters of recommendation and academic transcripts.
