The Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) can trace its history to 1887 as the University of Oregon Medical School. In 1974, the University of Oregon's schools of Dentistry, Medicine and Nursing were combined to form the independent and public University of Oregon Health Sciences Center. The university's current name was adopted in 2001. It is the only health and research university in Oregon and the only college in the state that grants doctoral degrees in medicine, dentistry and nursing. In 2010, OHSU was ranked third in primary care and 37th in research among 146 medical schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report. The university's family medicine program was also ranked second and its rural medicine program was ranked fourth. OHSU is affiliated with the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital and Doernbecher Children's Hospital, both of which are located at the university's main campus just south of downtown Portland.
The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine was founded in 1983 and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. The college offers master's and postgraduate doctoral degrees in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Through its clinics, the college also provides treatment to students and community members in addition to conducting research in acupuncture and Oriental medicine.
The National College of Natural Medicine offers programs leading to three graduate degrees -- Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and Master of Acupuncture. The college has provided ground-breaking naturopathic medical education since its founding in 1956. It is accredited by the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges and the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
The University of Western States traces its roots in chiropractic education to 1904. In 2010, the Western States Chiropractic College was re-named to the University of Western States to reflect an expanding curriculum beyond chiropractic education. The university offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Exercise and Sports Science and Doctor of Chiropractic programs, as well as a massage therapy program.
