Located in the southern district of St. Lucia, IAU opened in 2003. The College of Medicine (IAUCOM) bases its curriculum on programs in the United States, exposing students to case-based, problem-oriented curriculum (problem-based learning, or PBL) early in the program. PBL encourages research and discussion (active learning) as opposed to just sitting and memorizing (passive learning). Students also participate in local clinics in addition to classroom study. IAUCOM also offers a two-year pre-med program in the United States at Texas A&M University-Commerce. The program is a two-year, 90-hour program that enables medical students to obtain a medical degree within six years of graduating high school.
