The University of Tampere implemented the problem-based learning method in 1994, the first university in Finland to do so. Since then, the curriculum at Tampere has expanded to to integrate clinical and theoretical topics using a variety of teaching methods, including tutorials that often consist of 8 to 10 students and lectures focusing on independent studies and analysis of subjects discussed in the tutorials. Furthermore, students are taught professional skills including how to communicate and examine patients in a clinical setting. Lastly, students are encouraged to practice team work through various practical projects. Visits to health care institutions are also encouraged to enrich the learning process. Research at the University of Tampere is often completed in collaboration with other Finnish medical faculties and may be part of wider international research projects. Tampere provides programs for the general health care, family work, administration, public health care and mental health care.
