Anesthesiologist Programs in Kentucky

Anesthesiologists are medical specialists who are responsible for administering pain relief for surgical patients, women in labor and chronic pain sufferers. An undergraduate degree followed by four years of medical school and a four-year residency is required to become an anesthesiologist. According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, there are two accredited residency programs in anesthesiology in the state of Kentucky. There is also a master’s degree program in anesthesia designed specifically for nurses.

    • The College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky offers a residency in anesthesiology that consists of intensive theoretical and practical training in a variety of clinical settings. Applicants must submit a personal statement of interest, resume, letter of educational performance from their medical school dean, three letters of reference, and their United States Medical Licensing (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) scores. Residents may choose to specialize in the following areas: ambulatory anesthesia, cardiothoracic anesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, regional and acute pain, chronic pain, critical care and clinical or basic research.

    University of Louisville

    • The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Louisville offers a residency in anesthesiology at its level 1 trauma and tertiary care centers that serve both the state of Kentucky and Indiana. Applicants must submit a current resume, personal statement, letter from their medical school’s dean, three letters of recommendation and their USMLE scores, which are typically in the 85th percentile or higher. Alongside comprehensive clinical rotations at the university hospital, students have the opportunity to serve at Kosair Children’s Hospital, the Jewish Hospital, the VA Medical Center and the Pain Clinic. Students receive extensive training in perioperative patient care, pain management, critical care and various subspecialties within the field of anesthesia.

    Murray State University

    • Murray State University, in conjunction with the Trover Health System, offers a Master of Science degree in advanced practice nursing with a concentration in nurse anesthesia. Applicants must hold a baccalaureate nursing degree that includes prerequisite courses in nursing assessment and research, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and statistics with a GPA of at least 3.0. At least one year of professional work experience as an RN and three letters of reference are also required. Coursework includes nursing theories and concepts, nursing research, clinical practice, pathophysiology, scientific foundations of anesthesia, principles of anesthesia practice, nurse anesthesia pharmacology and practical clinical applications.
